Ohio is served by the Embassy in Washington DC — not New York. What that means for passports, NID, power of attorney and attestation.
The single most useful thing to know: Ohio falls under the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington, DC, not the Consulate General in New York. People here lose weeks posting documents to the wrong mission, so check this before you send anything.
Who covers which states
- Washington, DC — Embassy. Serves Ohio and every state not listed under another mission. This is us.
- New York — Consulate General. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Maine.
- Los Angeles — Consulate General. California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Arizona.
Bangladesh also maintains consulates in Chicago, Houston, Miami, New Orleans and Honolulu. Their remit varies, so confirm before assuming Chicago can help just because it is closer than DC.
The Embassy

- Consular applications are received 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. That is a two-hour window, and it is the single most common reason people drive down and come back empty-handed.
Two separate email addresses handle different things, and using the wrong one is a slow way to get no reply:
- Passport, visa, NVR, dual nationality, travel permit — [email protected]
- Power of attorney, attestation, birth certificate, J1 visa waiver — [email protected]
What people here usually need
- Passport renewal (MRP/e-passport). Start early. Members consistently report this taking longer than expected, and you cannot travel on an expired passport even to renew it in person.
- NID (National ID). Handled through the mission for citizens abroad. Requirements change; check the website rather than relying on what a friend did two years ago.
- Power of attorney. The common one — selling land or handling a family matter in Bangladesh. It must be attested by the mission to be usable there.
- Attestation of documents. Degree certificates, birth certificates, marriage certificates.
- NVR (No Visa Required) endorsement. For those who hold a foreign passport but were born Bangladeshi, or have Bangladeshi parents.
- Dual nationality certificate. Worth sorting out before you need it urgently.
Practical advice from members
- Ring or email before you drive. It is roughly eight hours each way to DC. Confirm your paperwork is complete first — the two-hour intake window is unforgiving.
- Postal applications are normal. Most people here do not travel to DC. Use tracked mail both ways and include a prepaid return envelope.
- Take more copies than you think you need, and bring originals plus photocopies of everything.
- Ask in the group first. Somebody has almost certainly done the exact thing you are about to do, and will tell you the one form that catches people out.
